Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang is currently Secretary General II of Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. He was the fifth Vice-chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) since 2008 and the first recipient of of the Merdeka Award for the category of outstanding Scholastic Achievement, in 2009. His academic contributions are in the field of environmental management and technology, particularly water and wastewater treatment, sustainable resource strategies and industrial ecology.
Apart from his involvement in academics, he also sits on various public agencies such as Chairman of The Environmental Quality Council, Malaysia (since 2009), and member of the National Water Services Commission (2007-2011). He is also active in voluntary bodies: Vice-President of the International Water Association (2004-2006), editor of Water Science & Technology, an international journal (since 2000), and Vice-President of the Harvard Business School Alumni Club of Malaysia (2010-2012).
He has a B.Eng. (UTM) in Chemical Engineering, MSc and PhD in the field of environmental engineering (Newcastle, UK) and attended Advanced Management Program (AMP) at the Harvard Business School.
He is a Fellow at the Swedish Royal Physiographic Society in Lund (Sweden), Fellow at the Science Academy (Malaysia), and Fellow at the Institute of Chemical Engineering (UK). He is also registered as a Professional Engineer (Malaysia), Chartered Engineer (UK), Chartered Scientist (UK), Chartered Water and Environmental Manager (UK). He is also a Visiting Professor at MIT (the United States), Imperial College London (UK), and Kyoto and Tokyo University (Japan).
He was born in Kampung Inas, Johol Negeri Sembilan,Malaysia in 1965.
